We’ve already written a how-to guide for Kegels. But most people are just interested in how kegel exercises benefits sexually. Kegel exercises for sex are the same exercises you’d do for bladder control or prolapse issues. But today, we’ll explain exactly why you should commit to a training program with smart devices like the Elvie Pelvic Floor Trainer to harness Kegels for better sex overall.

What are Kegels?

Kegels are techniques for muscle training that activate the same muscles you use to stop the flow of urine. (You don’t want to get in the habit of starting and stopping your urine flow though. Just use it to find the right muscles.)

To do a Kegel, tighten and hold those muscles for five seconds. Release for 5 seconds. Don’t hold your breath or tighten your bum. Do 3 sets of 10 reps each day to start to build up your pelvic floor. Over time, you can work towards doubling the amount of time you hold for.

Kegels are great because no one will ever know you are doing them. So, fit them into your downtime like during a commercial break or while cooking meals.

About your pelvic floor muscles

According to the NHS, your pelvic floor muscles are “the muscles around your bladder, bottom, and vagina or penis. Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles can help urinary incontinence, treat pelvic organ prolapse, and make sex better too.”

Both men and women benefit from pelvic floor exercises, although our range of pelvic floor trainers is currently limited to vulva owners. These devices can help you to understand how to properly do the exercises by monitoring your contractions in real-time. They often come with several programmes to change up your routine.

Lastly, they can serve as a visual reminder - in themselves- to stick to your training plan. For people suffering from bladder, bowel, prolapse or sexual issues; these devices can help.

Can Kegels improve sex?

In a word, yes. Kegels can improve sex on a psychological and physical level. As these muscles become stronger, you can better grip a penis or toy during penetrative sex. This can increase the sensation for both you and your partner. It may also help with blood flow to the area, aiding in reaching an orgasm.

Lastly, when you start and maintain any exercise programme, you get a boost to your mental health. Perhaps it’s because you are taking control of your body and how you feel. By doing something productive towards your sexual health, you may experience a positive psychological boost of feel-good brain chemicals.

And good moods are great for our sex lives in general. It can increase your sex drive, feelings of desire, pleasure from sex and interest in having new sexual experiences.
